Micky In The Van salon show

On Tuesday evening we crawled north through Melbourne’s heavy rush hour traffic to see something very special: the Micky In The Van media presentation, which was part old fashioned salon show (the best kind of fashion show, as far as I’m concerned) and part performance.

Micky In The Van is the amazing label designed by super stylish Estelle (check out Estelle’s instagram for her awesome outfits), who also owns The Estelle Store in Ivanhoe, our venue for the night.

One of the nicest things I’ve found via blogging (especially as someone who began way back when, when it was a weird, and mostly unheard of, thing to do, and joy from posting pictures of wool travelling about was all I expected, and wanted, from it) has been all the people I’ve met through the wonders of The Internets. Like any city, Melbourne can be quite a closed place to newcomers, and snapping away and sharing things online turned out to be a brilliant way to open doors to worlds I wouldn’t have even known existed.

And one of the loveliest people I’ve met is Estelle, and, not only she is a gem, she is very talented, too. Her designs are both distinctly of her beautiful and unique aesthetic, and totally wearable at the same time. I love how they reference some vintage (I appreciate nods to the 30s and 40s) elements, whilst being entirely modern, and so clearly of Estelle’s vision.

Oh, I could gush forever. BUT let’s have a look instead!

We only just got there in time, and grabbed the last of the empty seats as the lights dimmed. It began with singing by Kate Bright, and ballet from Maria Trenton, which set the mood perfectly.

And then the clothes. While the pieces work alone, they also layer well, too, and Estelle dressed her model in each outfit as part of the performance, so we could see how they could be put together. I loved this idea, as pieces that you might not think of combining looked completely different – very inspiring.

I loved the richly coloured prints and hoods

And the hats, some of which had a great vintage asymmetric feel

And strong shoulder lines.

This was one of my favourites. I saw the capelet a few weeks ago and it was love at first sight! Check out the back:

And then this was possibly the best moment of all – the happiness at the end! It’s always so special to witness things like this, and you can really feel the love in the room. All the work and planning and stress is worth it. Hearts! And in an independent boutique too!!!

The Estelle store is at 244 Upper Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe – do pop in, I promsie you will love it. There is also a rather good op shop just a few doors down, and gelato accross the road… love to support local! x
